Indian Expat from Kerala Dies in Riyadh After AC Compressor Explosion
A 36-year-old Indian expatriate from Kerala’s Idukki district tragically died in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, following severe injuries caused by an air conditioner compressor explosion. The incident highlights growing concerns about domestic safety issues for foreign workers in the Kingdom.
Victim Identified as Longtime Kerala Resident
The victim, Ziyad Basheer, hailed from Randupalam, Thodupuzha, and had been living in Manjali. He worked as a private driver for a Saudi citizen for the past seven years, becoming a familiar figure in the local expat community.
Details of the Incident
The explosion occurred around 2:00 p.m. on Friday when an air conditioner compressor reportedly burst inside a residential building in Riyadh. Ziyad suffered severe burn injuries and was immediately taken to Al Mouwasat Hospital near Exit 9.
He was placed in the intensive care unit for two days, but despite the best efforts of medical professionals, he passed away around 2:10 p.m. on Sunday.
Funeral Arrangements
Ziyad’s body has been moved to the hospital morgue and is scheduled to be buried at the Naseem Al Salam Mausoleum in Riyadh on Monday afternoon.
Family in Mourning
Ziyad is survived by his wife and daughter who remain in Kerala. The Indian expat community in Saudi Arabia has expressed grief and solidarity with the bereaved family.
