The Roads General Authority (RGA) has successfully coated the asphalt around Namira Mosque using advanced technology to lower temperatures and provide comfort for pilgrims.
Cooling Initiative at Namira Mosque
The initiative involves cooling the asphalt surface around Namira Mosque at the Holy Sites using a white coating designed to reduce the heat for pilgrims under the scorching sun on the Day of Arafat, the climax of the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
Technology and Impact
The white coating, made from locally manufactured materials that absorb less sunlight, helps reduce surface temperatures by about 20 degrees Celsius.
According to Roads General Authority Spokesperson Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi, this surface-cooling technology, which reflects sunlight, was applied in partnership with several entities dedicated to serving pilgrims.
Previous Success and Expansion
Last year, the experiment was conducted on pedestrian paths leading to the Jamrat area, where it successfully reduced temperatures by 12 to 15 degrees Celsius. This year, the initiative expanded to cover the surroundings of Namira Mosque, an area of approximately 25,000 square meters. The technology works by reflecting sunlight and thereby reducing surface temperatures, creating a more comfortable environment for pilgrims.
Addressing Urban Heat Island Effect
The initiative addresses the "Urban heat island effect," where roads absorb heat during the day and release it at night, increasing energy consumption and air pollution. By scientifically reflecting sun rays, the cooling mechanism reduces temperatures during both day and night, aiming to create more comfortable pedestrian areas and improve quality of life.
