Many young Saudis have graduated from high school this summer — but only one has done so while suffering from full-body paralysis, and confined to a hospital bed.

That is the achievement of Abdulrahman Adel Ibrahim Mughawi, 20, quadriplegic since an accident six years ago when the car in which he was a passenger was involved in a collision.

“He went to the hospital able to move fully, but unfortunately the condition progressed, said his father, Adel Mughawi.

“It affects all his limbs, even the respiratory system. He has been using a ventilator all this time.

“We worked on encouraging him and doing everything that someone with his condition can benefit from. Throughout these years, we read many books to him, and worked on anything to develop his cognitive skills.”

Abdulrahman’s strong and determined character transcends all obstacles.

“I got into an accident six years ago which injured my spinal cord and took away my ability to move my four limbs, in addition to making me unable to breathe,” he said. “I am still at the intensive care unit in Asir Central Hospital.

“I was able to complete my studies, both intermediate and secondary stages, on the white bed. My hope in recovering has never stopped. My treatment and studies are my essential goals, and I strive very hard to achieve them.”
