One hundred and fifty five female postgraduate students at King Saud University might find themselves in a situation where they have to postpone their studies as accommodation for them has not been ready yet. Most of the registered students are from different cities outside Riyadh.
One of the students, who requested anonymity, told Okaz/Saudi Gazette that there are around 200 higher studies students from outside Riyadh who have been admitted into various postgraduate programs. They applied for a housing last Sunday but were surprised that only 45 were accepted while the remaining were put on hold.
The university has four residential towers for female students, of which three have been completed but the fourth one is still under maintenance except one floor which is ready and being used as nursery. Each tower has 100 two-room apartments; in other words, each tower has 200 rooms that can accommodate 200 students. Although students sent an email and WhatsApp message to the president of the university, they have not received any reply.
Okaz/Saudi Gazette contacted the university spokesman Dr. Ahmed Al-Tamimi who said 600 female students have been provided with accommodation and that there are currently 45 on the waiting list. He said the fourth tower is still under maintenance and cannot be used for accommodation right now.
“We can accommodate a certain number of female students and we cannot solve all accommodation problems. The university is only responsible for providing lecture halls, faculty members, laboratories and educational materials. As for accommodation, it is an additional service, which we provide whenever available. This is an annual problem and we try to help students as much as we can,” he said.
