Saudi Arabia's media regulator said on Tuesday that Gulf Arab states asked Netflix to remove content considered offensive to "Islamic and societal values" in the region.

According to a joint statement by the Saudi media regulator and the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council, headquartered in Riyad, the offending material is not specifically identified, merely referred to as content that "contravenes Islamic and societal values".

Riyadh's General Commission for Audiovisual Media said the content violated media regulations in the Gulf Cooperation Council, which includes Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait.

Netflix said it would take "necessary legal measures" if it continued to broadcast the content.

"The platform has been contacted to remove this content, including content directed at children," the statement stated.

Also on Saudi state television, a segment suggested Netflix could be banned in the Kingdom because it reaches children.

On Tuesday, the UAE said it would monitor Netflix's content and assess its commitment to broadcasting controls in the country in the coming days.
