The government issued a statement saying the 10 women were issued the licenses at the General Department of Traffic in the capital, Riyadh, on Monday. International media weren’t present for the event.

The women took a brief driving test before receiving their licenses as they’d already held driving licenses from other countries, including the U.K., Lebanon and Canada.

About 2,000 licenses are expected to be issued for women next week, according to a statement from the Ministry of Information.

Three women – from Wales, Canada and the United States – will train female driving instructors in Saudi Arabia, the BBC reported on Saturday. Susan Newbon, from Wales, Deborah Sherwood, a Canadian, and Norma Adrianzen, an American, will work as “senior assessors” for up to two years starting June 24.
