Saudi Arabia has warned residents and citizens against hiring illegal maids during the holy month of Ramadan.
According to Saudi law, lawbreakers shall be sentenced to two years in jail and get a fine of up to SR 2 million.
Lawyer Nayef Al Morshedy said there is a royal order stipulating that whoever hires or helps an illegal maid work in the country will be sentenced to two years in jail and fined up to SR 2 million.
Run away
Illegal maids are those who either run away from their sponsors or enter the country illegally. They also include those with expired residency visa.
Saudi Arabia usually witnesses a spike in illegal maids during Ramadan in particular especially those who are begging because they know it is the month where Muslims give charity voluntarily to those in need.
