Last Thursday, the General Department of Traffic in Saudi Arabia announced a 25% discount on fines for traffic violations. However, this discount excludes accidents caused by overtaking and speeding.
The Traffic Department clarified this exemption on its social media platform X. Some violations not eligible for the discount include drifting, operating unauthorized driving schools, and violating regulations on vehicle weights, dimensions, and inspections.
The 25% discount coincided with the implementation of a royal order to reduce all outstanding traffic fines by 50% starting April 18.
According to Saudi Moroor, violations occurring after April 18 will incur a 25% reduction under Article 75 of the Traffic Law. Failure to pay fines by the specified deadline could result in imprisonment, vehicle seizure, and further penalties.
At the direction of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Traffic Department initiated the fine reduction initiative. This discount applies to violations preceding April 18, with fines payable within six months from April 18 to October 18, 2024.
The initiative aims to alleviate financial burdens on citizens, expatriates, tourists, and GCC nationals by reducing fines for pre-discount period violations. However, the royal decree prohibits discounts for violations such as drifting, driving under the influence, and excessive speeding.
