In a significant move to address harassment crimes, Saudi security authorities have begun announcing the names of individuals arrested for such offenses. Makkah police, in a press statement issued on Friday, disclosed the full name of an Egyptian expatriate, Walid Al-Sayed Abdel Hamid, who was arrested for harassing a woman. Legal measures were swiftly taken against the accused, who was subsequently referred to the Public Prosecution for further action.
Similarly, the Jeddah governorate police announced the arrest of a Saudi citizen, Nasser Hadi Hamad Al-Salah, on Saturday for harassment. The citizen faced legal repercussions and was referred to the Public Prosecution as per established procedures.
Under the Anti-Harassment Law, perpetrators of harassment crimes face imprisonment for up to two years and a fine not exceeding SR100,000. Repeat offenses or incidents occurring under specific circumstances, such as involving children, persons with special needs, or workplace environments, incur harsher penalties, including imprisonment for up to five years and increased fines.
The law defines harassment as any utterance, act, or gesture of a sexual nature that violates another person's body, honor, or modesty, including through modern technologies. Its primary objective is to combat harassment, deter offenders, and safeguard the privacy and dignity of individuals as guaranteed by Islamic Shariah and Saudi law.
